Nailed my head today on the bottom of our pool and felt/heard a *crunch*. My inner lifeguard (four years of guarding) got me to the side and up, then lying down and not moving and telling my family to call an ambulance. Pretty much ruined the family reunion taking place at the time. Firehouse is kitty corner from us, so EMTs were there in two shakes of a tail feather, strapping me onto the board and braced.

One CT scan later they say I’m okay, but head turning and other neck-bending activities are still sore. But I can feel my toes and move my fingers, so I will always be grateful for that. Kept joking, though because I was so nervous of permanent damage:

Doc: “How tall are you?”

Me: “5 foot 10 ...... Maybe a bit shorter now.”

Do not take chances with anything that resembles a serious head injury. Ever. Even if they seem kinda trivial. My dad years ago stood up and whacked a steel beam while wearing a hardhat on a job site. Got back up after being knocked flat and finished his day. He still can’t turn his neck left more than a few degrees left now.

Please be safe.

I was knocked out twice in the Marines, once was a shockwave and they put me on an outgoing flight, kept me under and I woke up in Germany surrounded by a white curtain. That was wierd. I am pretty sure I can’t remember things going way back. My mom will say something and I’m like, I have no idea what yer talking about. My cousin played rugby and he can’t remember a whole day when he got hit. Protect yer noggins!

Not dying is a good thing. I’m a huge fan, myself.

Don’t feel too sorry for that Ford GT. Even in that state it’s probably worth more than when it was purchased new :(

That tag though, LOL. Good to hear you’re OK. Any time you start talking about head or spinal injuries it gets scary fast. Here’s hoping you don’t wake up today with concussion symptoms, those really suck.

As a (98%) recovered traumatic brain injury survivor, I completely and fully agree. Do everything you can to protect your noggin.

I’m genuinely glad you’re ok. Neuroplasticity is an amazing thing, but once certain functions are gone, they don’t come back.

Poor Ford GT isn’t okay.

Not dying is always good, always under rated. All the kids these days are into that new YOLO thing, and it just makes me feel old. I’ll stick with the classics

Thanks! It’s sobering to consider being in a state where I couldn’t live an independent life anymore.

Do concussion symptoms include massive headaches and unbridled urges to satiate my pain with mass consumption of chocolate while staring far too long at my ceiling? Because that’s what I have.

Thank you very much for the thoughts. I’ve been following the breakthroughs researchers have been making with nerves for people with extreme difficulties such as missing limbs or deafness. In all seriousness, it really will be a beautiful day when fixing a broken spinal cord will be talked about with the same tone as getting tonsils out.

Headaches and lack of focus yes, the chocolate cravings, not in my experience.

It’s why I’m always harping on my son to wear his bike helmet. And I mean every damn time he swings a leg over the bike, even if it’s down the freaking block, he better put a helmet on.

Glad you’re OK.

Thank you, and I’m glad you’re emphasizing safety to your son.

The hardest thing is getting kids to put things in perspective of their future and weigh the risks. Putting on a helmet and looking a little silly is a heck of a lot better than the other worst case scenario. But I know when I was a kid, I thought it would never happen.

But the coolest people wear helmets! Like race car drivers!

How do you wreck a Ford GT40? Even if you have insurance, cmon dude. Glad to see Stonecold is recovering.

“Closed Head” injuries are nothing to mess with...

Always amazed with motorcycle drivers who choose to not wear helmets.
